Vitestro

Vitestro, a Utrecht-based medical robotics firm, builds Aletta, a CE-marked autonomous robotic device that performs the full diagnostic blood draw using imaging, AI and robotics.

Vitestro is a Netherlands-based medical robotics company, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Utrecht, that develops autonomous robotic devices to perform the entire diagnostic blood draw procedure without human intervention. Its product, Aletta®, described as the Autonomous Robotic Phlebotomy Device™ (ARPD™), combines multi-modal imaging - near-infrared, ultrasound and Doppler ultrasound - with robotics, computer vision and artificial intelligence to carry out vein identification, needle insertion, blood collection and bandage application autonomously. In August 2024 it became the world's first and only CE-marked Autonomous Robotic Phlebotomy Device.

The approach has been clinically validated. Trial results published in Clinical Chemistry reported a 94.5% first-stick success rate, with 90% of patients describing pain as less than or comparable to manual blood draws. Vitestro collaborates with European hospitals including OLVG Lab, St. Antonius, Amsterdam UMC and Odense University Hospital in Denmark, and is pursuing regulatory authorisation in the United States.

The company employs nearly 100 people and raised a $70m Series B round alongside additional funding. Vitestro was founded by Toon Overbeeke and Brian Joseph, whose motivation stemmed from the difficult blood-draw experiences of people close to them. It operates across the medical devices, diagnostics and clinical laboratory sectors, supplying hospitals and healthcare providers.
