Oxford Nanopore Technologies

Oxford Nanopore Technologies develops and commercializes nanopore-based electronic single-molecule sensing technology for real-time DNA and RNA sequencing, from portable to production-scale devices.

Oxford Nanopore Technologies develops and commercializes nanopore-based electronic single-molecule sensing technology for real-time DNA and RNA sequencing. Founded in 2005 as a spin-out from the University of Oxford, following decades of nanopore research, the company builds systems that read genetic material by measuring changes in electrical current as individual molecules pass through a protein nanopore. Its product range spans a wide performance envelope: MinION, a portable, pocket-sized sequencing device, and PromethION, a benchtop and production-scale system for high-throughput sequencing. The engineering challenges at the company cut across nanopore science, molecular biology, electronics, informatics and manufacturing, and its teams work across all of these domains alongside applications development. The technology is used in scientific research, healthcare, biotechnology, industrial biotech and environmental applications, with customers in over 125 countries and more than 20,000 peer-reviewed publications referencing the platform. Oxford Nanopore employs over 1,000 people and is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park in Oxford, UK, with additional sites in Cambridge (UK), New York, Cambridge (MA), San Francisco, Singapore, Shanghai and Beijing, and commercial presences in Japan, Germany, France and India. The company describes its mission as democratizing molecular analysis, and its workforce spans science, engineering and commercialization.
