MotherDuck

MotherDuck builds a serverless cloud analytics database service on the DuckDB core, combining query-engine engineering with cloud database product experience.

MotherDuck builds a serverless cloud version of DuckDB, offering a commercial analytics database service founded on the DuckDB core technology. The product, also called MotherDuck, is a serverless cloud analytics database conceived by co-founder Jordan Tigani as a cloud counterpart to DuckDB's embedded engine. The company operates at the intersection of query engines, database technology and serverless cloud computing, with applications in data analytics, cloud databases and data warehousing.

The venture is a partnership between commercial product experience and database engineering. DuckDB Labs, the organisation behind the DuckDB core, is a co-founder of the endeavour and has stated its aim to build the world's best analytics database. Tigani previously worked at Google, where he helped turn the Dremel query engine into BigQuery, a serverless cloud service.

Technical work spans the analytics database stack, from query engine internals to the operational concerns of a serverless cloud service. The team blends engineers from the DuckDB core with builders of cloud database products; Tigani holds the title "chief duck-herder".
