Avantium
Amsterdam, North Holland, NL
Avantium develops and commercialises catalytic technologies that convert plant-based feedstocks into FDCA and the recyclable polymer PEF, with commercial-scale production in Delfzijl, the Netherlands.
Avantium is a commercial-stage renewable chemistry company that develops and commercialises technologies for converting sustainable carbon feedstocks into high-value chemicals and circular plastics. Its technical work spans catalysis, chemical process development and polymers, backed by more than 20 years of expertise in the field and a portfolio of more than 120 granted and pending patent families.
The company's YXY® technology platform catalytically converts plant-based sugars into chemical building blocks such as FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid), aimed at packaging, textiles and film markets collectively valued at over $200 billion. Its product Releaf® (PEF - polyethylene furanoate) is a 100% plant-based, recyclable polymer designed to outperform conventional petroleum-based plastics. In Delfzijl, Avantium operates the world's first FDCA Flagship Plant, converting renewable feedstocks into FDCA at commercial scale.
Operations are concentrated in the Netherlands: headquarters and R&D laboratories in Amsterdam, a pilot plant in Geleen, and a pilot plant alongside the FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl. Avantium collaborates worldwide with industry leaders and brand owners including Toyobo, Carlsberg, LVMH and Albert Heijn, with a stated focus on scaling technologies and supporting the transition to a circular economy.
