EnginZyme develops a cell-free biocatalysis platform using immobilised enzymes to turn renewable feedstocks into chemicals and ingredients for industrial manufacturers.
EnginZyme is a Swedish industrial biotechnology company founded in 2014 by Karim Engelmark Cassimjee, Robin Chatterjee and Samuel Hargestam. It develops a cell-free biocatalysis platform that uses immobilised enzymes to convert renewable feedstocks into chemicals and ingredients, with the aim of replacing fossil-based manufacturing without compromising cost, scalability or performance.
At the centre of the technology is EziG, a patented enzyme-immobilisation method that produces stable, reusable biocatalysts able to function in multi-step reactions and continuous-flow systems. The company's technical work spans enzyme engineering, biocatalysis, cell-free bioprocessing, process design, automation, machine learning and bioprocessing scale-up. Alongside the immobilisation platform, EnginZyme supplies off-the-shelf immobilised enzyme products to manufacturers.
For industrial partners, the company offers tailored services covering feasibility studies, process design, pilot-scale validation and technology transfer. Target sectors include personal care ingredients, food and nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and industrial chemicals. The stated aim is to reduce reliance on scarce metals, energy-intensive processes and waste-generating chemistry by combining biology with industrial process engineering.
