Verkor

Verkor designs and manufactures low-carbon lithium-ion battery cells in France, operating a Grenoble R&D and pilot-line centre and a Dunkerque gigafactory serving the European EV market.

Verkor designs and manufactures low-carbon lithium-ion battery cells in France for the European electric vehicle market. Founded in 2020 by six veterans of the energy, automotive and mobility industries, the company is working towards what it terms European battery sovereignty: a domestic supply chain intended to reduce reliance on non-European sources. It has raised over €2 billion in financing.

The company's industrial base rests on two sites. The Verkor Innovation Centre, opened in Grenoble in 2023, houses its R&D laboratory, an Industry 4.0 pilot line and the Ecole de la Batterie training campus. Its first gigafactory, at Dunkerque, was inaugurated in December 2025 under the patronage of President Emmanuel Macron. Initial capacity is 16 GWh per year - enough, the company says, to power 300,000 electric vehicles annually - with plans to scale to 50 GWh by 2030.

The Dunkerque plant accounts for 1,200 direct jobs and a claimed 3,000 indirect positions. Work is organised around low-carbon manufacturing processes, battery cell design and industrial training, with the Grenoble pilot line serving as the bridge between laboratory development and gigafactory production. Verkor operates in France with a focus on the wider European market across the electric vehicle, automotive, energy and mobility sectors.
