By moving parcels through a flexible, scalable network with fewer touchpoints, the company aims to deliver faster and with lower environmental impact; it reports emissions cuts of up to 60% relative to conventional approaches. The firm operates in Europe and serves the e-commerce, retail and parcel-delivery sectors.
The engineering challenge is central to the business. Relay develops proprietary algorithms and real-time data systems to optimise logistics networks, drawing on operations research, computer science, mathematics and data science. More than half of the roughly 90-person team works in engineering, product and data, and the company counts over 45 advanced degrees in computer science, mathematics and operations research among its staff.
Relay raised a $35m Series A, described as Europe's largest-ever logistics Series A. The company's stated aim is to reduce delivery costs so they do not determine what can be sold online, and to enable more goods to move more freely between more people.
