Q.ANT GmbH develops photonic processing systems that compute with light, including the Native Processing Server with a photonic NPU PCIe card and a TFLN chip pilot line, for energy-efficient AI and HPC.
Q.ANT GmbH is a photonic deep-tech scale-up developing processing systems that compute natively with light, targeting energy-efficient artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. The company's premise is a shift away from transistor-based computing towards photonic processing, in which optical signals carry out computation directly rather than merely transporting data.
Its flagship product, the Q.ANT Native Processing Server (NPS), is described as the first commercial photonic processor for accelerated AI and HPC workloads. The system is a 19-inch rack-mountable server incorporating a photonic neural processing unit (NPU) in PCIe card form, intended to operate alongside existing computing infrastructure as a light-based co-processor. Q.ANT reports energy efficiency of up to 30 times that of conventional CMOS technologies. The NPS is being evaluated under real workloads at European supercomputing centres, including LRZ (Leibniz Supercomputing Centre) and JSC (Jülich Supercomputing Centre) in Germany.
Underpinning the hardware is Q.ANT's own manufacturing capability: a Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) photonic chip pilot line, built and operated in collaboration with IMS CHIPS (Institute for Microelectronics Stuttgart). The technical scope of the company spans thin-film lithium niobate photonics, photonic AI acceleration, chip fabrication and PCIe hardware integration. Applications addressed include AI, high-performance computing, data centres and supercomputing.
Q.ANT positions itself around what it calls 'Native Computing' and places emphasis on energy efficiency and sustainability in computing. Its work combines in-house pilot-line production with rigorous production evaluation in operational HPC environments, and its collaborations and deployments are concentrated in Europe.
