Ore Energy
Ore Energy, a TU Delft spin-out founded in 2022, develops iron-air batteries that store energy for over 100 hours for utility grids and data centres.
Ore Energy develops long-duration energy storage systems built on iron-air battery technology. Founded in 2022 as a spin-out of TU Delft, the company builds modular batteries from iron, water and air that store energy for more than 100 hours. The electrochemistry relies on reversible rusting: discharging draws in air and converts iron to rust to generate current, while charging expels air and reverts the rust to iron. The technology draws on eight years of research by the company's co-founders.
The systems are designed to scale from MWh to GWh deployments and are aimed at utility grids and data centres. Ore Energy positions the technology around abundant materials and simple, low-cost construction intended to make grid-scale storage straightforward to expand. Its stated focus is on renewable energy integration and grid decarbonisation as part of the global sustainable energy transition.
The company is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and has secured over €60 million in total funding, including a $43 million Series A round.
