Opsydia

Opsydia, a University of Oxford spin-out founded in 2017, builds adaptive optics laser systems that write waveguides and nano-structures inside glass and diamond for photonics packaging and gemstone security.

Opsydia is a laser technology company founded in 2017 and headquartered at Begbroke Science Park in Oxfordshire, UK. A spin-out from the University of Oxford's Dynamic Optics and Photonics group within the Department of Engineering Science, the company builds on decades of academic work in adaptive optics and applies it to industrial laser processing. Its core technology is a proprietary adaptive optics direct laser write system that fabricates optical waveguides and nano-scale structures within transparent materials, including glass and diamond.

The company's product line targets several distinct applications. Its glass interposer technology for co-packaged optics connects optical fibres to photonic chips in three dimensions without time-intensive active alignment, addressing a packaging bottleneck in semiconductor, optical communications, AI, high-performance computing and data centre supply chains. Separately, Opsydia provides subsurface laser inscription for gemstone security, a method of marking high-value stones such as diamonds for trusted authentication.

Opsydia's systems are designed to integrate into existing chip assembly lines and are proven to operate continuously. The company serves customers across Europe, the United States and Asia, and combines its academic research base with industrial engineering experience.
