lowRISC CIC is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company that builds commercial-grade, thoroughly verified open-source silicon designs and stewards multi-partner open hardware projects. Founded in 2014 as a spin-out from the University of Cambridge Department of Computer Science and Technology, it works to make open-source silicon a reality through transparency, collaboration and reuse in semiconductor development. Its engineering teams are based in Cambridge, UK and Zurich, Switzerland.
Its best-known projects are OpenTitan, described as the world's first open-source silicon root of trust, and Ibex, a production-quality, thoroughly verified RISC-V CPU core designed to be freely adopted and adapted. Work spans open-source silicon, RISC-V processor design, hardware security, semiconductor design and hardware verification.
The company operates a collaborative, multi-partner engineering model with industry and academic partners including Google, ETH Zurich, Western Digital and Seagate. Alongside its project stewardship, it offers engineering consultancy. Its work has been recognised with OpenUK awards and the Cambridge Ring Award.
