The Exploration Company develops modular, reusable orbital vehicles for space station cargo and crew transport, with missions to low-Earth orbit and lunar destinations.
The Exploration Company, founded in 2021, is developing Nyx, a modular and reusable orbital vehicle designed for in-orbit refueling, to transport cargo and crew to space stations in low-Earth orbit and beyond. Its technical domains include spacecraft modularity, reusable architectures, thermal protection systems, and open interfaces.
The Nyx vehicle is launchable from any heavy launcher, with a cost target of €20,000 per kilogram for low-Earth orbit missions. Planned variants include Nyx Earth for cargo transport starting in 2026, Nyx Gateway for operations at the Lunar Gateway, and Nyx Moon for lunar surface activities by 2028. The company has secured contracts with ESA, Axiom Space, and Starlab Space, and is the first European firm to sign a Space Act Agreement with NASA.
With approximately 400 employees and €196.8 million in funding, it operates in Germany, France, and Italy. A re-entry demonstration flight is scheduled for June 2025 with the Mission Possible vehicle.
