Hystar is a Norwegian technology company specialising in Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyser systems for green hydrogen production. Spun off in 2020 from SINTEF, Scandinavia's largest independent research organisation, the firm focuses on electrochemical engineering to lower the cost of renewable hydrogen. Its stated goal is to achieve world-record efficiency and reduced electricity consumption in PEM stacks.
The company's flagship product is the Vega 1000, a containerised 5 MW PEM electrolyser solution. Hystar reports that it has achieved the world's highest efficiency ratings for its PEM stacks. The firm's team grew from 10 to 27 employees within its first two years of operation. The company operates from Høvik, Norway, with additional presence in Finland, Poland, and South Korea.
Hystar announced the final investment decision for a gigawatt-scale factory in late 2025. The company works in partnership with major industrial players and targets applications in the energy transition and hard-to-abate sectors.
