Differential Bio

Differential Bio builds a Virtual Scale-up Platform combining robotic lab automation, microbiology and AI to predict and optimise microbial bioprocesses across scale-up stages.

Differential Bio, founded in 2025 and based in Munich, Germany, develops the Virtual Scale-up Platform for bioprocess optimization. The platform combines scale-down experimentation with AI-based modelling to simulate and optimise bioprocesses virtually, predicting optimal conditions across scale-up stages and reducing dependence on costly and time-consuming physical experiments. The stated ambition is to make microbial growth predictable, scalable and cost-effective, with the longer-term vision of becoming "The Organism Modeling Company".

The company's technical approach spans microbiology, robotic lab automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning. It emphasises automated high-throughput screening and the generation of dense, standardised datasets as the basis for organism modelling and bioprocess scale-up simulation. Reported outcomes include a four-fold increase in biomass yield for a probiotics client using a plant-based growth medium, alongside a 16% reduction in production cost.

Differential Bio raised €2 million in pre-seed funding and serves customers across biomanufacturing, probiotics, food, cosmetics, chemicals and materials. Its work is directed at the broader bioeconomy, with an R&D approach focused on cost and time efficiency. The company operates from Munich with a presence across Europe.
